The city of Hachioji is a large urban community of more than 500,000 people, located in the Tama district of Tokyo with a large total area of 186.31 square kilometers stretching 24.3 kilometers in the east-west direction and 13.4 kilometers in the north-south direction. Hachioji is also an important transportation crossroads where National Highway 20 running east-west intersects National Highway 16 running north-south, and there will soon be a completed interchange between the central expressway and the metropolitan highway. Moreover, Hachioji is known as a beautiful college town with 20 universities and colleges. Hachioji is also famous for fashion shows and other activities featuring the area's traditional textiles. Hachioji Medical Association is emphasizing nighttime and holiday emergency services. The nighttime emergency services are being offered from 8PM to 11PM, 365 days a year, and the association has received special recognition for this service from the Minister of Health and Welfare. The medical association has performed more than 40,000 basic physical examinations as well as cancer examinations for such as lung, breast and uterine cancer. Also as part of mother and child health services, the medical association provides maternity care and check-ups for three-month old, six-month old, nine-month old, eighteen-month old and three-year old children. The association is also involved in a school health project in which the association makes available to schools internists, ophthalmologists and otorhinologists and sponsors local school health conferences where results of research studies are presented as part of the program. In addition to such continuing local medical activities, a visiting nurse station and the Hachioji Local Industry Health Center were opened on August 1, 1997, to further strengthen health-related activities by the association.
