School Health

There are 70 public elementary schools and 35 public junior high schools in Hachioji with a total enrollment of about 43,700. An internist, an otolaryngologist and ophthalmologist, all members of the Hachioji Medical Association, are assigned to each school to conduct physical examinations of the school children at the time of entering school, for annual spring physical examinations, and prior to field trips and swimming classes.

In order to detect any heart diseases, the school internist takes electrocardiograms of all first graders and seventh graders, as well as of all students in other grades who have heart murmurs. Children with possible abnormalities are referred to children's hospitals in Hachioji or to the Hachioji Medical Center where more accurate secondary and ternary examinations are conducted. These examination lead to proper follow-up care.

Based on the concept of improving overall school health programs, the Hachioji Medical Association, jointly with the city government, has organized the Hachioji City School Health Committee. Members of the committee representing Hachioji city are staff from the city office, school principals, teachers in charge of school health, and dieticians, and representing the medical profession are physicians, dentists, and pharmacists. The committee sponsors lectures and research seminars and provides opportunities for members to exchange opinions. Each fall, the committee surveys the health programs of each school, selects and gives recognition to schools with excellent health programs as well as to schools which are making earnest efforts to improve their health programs.

The association will continue to support activities to improve health of school children.
